Moravian Karst is definitely worth a visit as it is the largest and most beautiful karst area in Central Europe. It is one of the natural wonders of Czech Republic with some stunning giant stalagmites and stalactites.
You get the chance to visit five caves and the famous Macocha Abyss – 138 metres deep. You can see Macocha from the bottom if you take a boat trip in the Punkva Caves and sail along the subterranean River Punkva.
According to local legend, Macocha (in Czech similar to the word for “stepmother”) got its name when an evil stepmother wanted to get rid of her husband’s son to claim an inheritance. She lured him into the woods and cast him into the abyss. But her conscience got the better of her and in the end she jumped in as well.
Do not let this legend put you off though, it really is worth seeing.
